Charles Frederick Hill

Charles, “Chuck/Charlie” Hill, 72, of Kalamazoo, MI, passed away on September 9, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime defined by service, loyalty, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the people he loved. 

Born in Jackson, MI., to Betty Lou and Donald Hill on November 19, 1953. Chuck was into Boy Scouts and Baseball during his early school years in Kalamazoo, but when the family moved to Gun Lake in 1967, he focused on football and the Delton Wrestling Club. Chuck was a charter member of Delton Kellogg’s Wrestling Club, helping it to grow into a state-recognized team. He was chosen Team Captain his senior year for the Wrestling team in the 1971-72 school year and also earned a spot at the State finals. The determination, strength, and dedication he showed as a young athlete would remain defining qualities throughout his life. Graduating from Delton Kellogg High School in 1972, Chuck proudly joined the US Army & served his country as a Military Police officer in Germany during the Vietnam War. He earned a National Defense Service Medal for sharp shooting. After the Army, he attended KVCC and completed the Law Enforcement program. Following in his father’s footsteps, he joined the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department. He had an extraordinary 42-year career of serving and protecting his community and as an instructor for KVCC’s law enforcement academy. He also had a deep love for soccer and the Kalamazoo-area soccer community. He poured countless hours into supporting and encouraging organizations and the participating athletes. Most importantly, his daughter and her soccer career. From AYSO to semi-professional he was by her side every step of the way.

His career and life is remembered as a man that never judged people by where they came from, what they had, or the mistakes they may have made. When in need, he showed up for them, his family and friends, young athletes, and sometimes for somebody he barely knew, who simply needed someone willing to help and be in their corner. He was someone you could count on. 

Above all, he cherished his family. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Patricia (Francisco) Hill. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother, mentor, and protector. His family knew him as the man who would always have their backs, the person they could call when they needed help, advice, or encouragement. 

Chuck is survived by his loving wife, Patricia, his children, his grandchildren, his five sisters, and many extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Josie Hill; Betty Lou and Sam Trudelle, all four parents held an important place within his family. 

A Celebration of Life and military burial will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek. The family is currently awaiting confirmation of the date. Service details will be announced once arrangements have been finalized.
