John R. Compton, 78, of Kalamazoo, passed away Sunday, August 30, 2026 at Beacon Kalamazoo. He was born January 15, 1948 in Winamac, Indiana, the son of Robert and Maxine (Boulden) Compton. After graduating high school, John enlisted in the U.S. Army serving at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. On October 3, 1987, in Kalamazoo, he was united in marriage to Susan Tideswell. John worked as an industrial chemical salesperson until his retirement. He enjoyed old cars, visiting the Gilmore Car Museum, and was in the process of restoring a ’63 T-Bird. John was an excellent provider, husband, father, and grandfather and will be deeply missed by his family.

John is survived by his wife of 38 years, Susan; three children, Jennifer (William) Tohtz, Andrew Compton, and Glenn Compton; three grandchildren, Kayla Goodwin, Karlie Nicholson, and William “Liam” Tohtz; four siblings, Jim (Madonna) Compton, Jeff (Debra) Compton, Debra Compton, and Barbara (late Donald) Rhamy; along with many nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no public services at this time. For those wishing to make a contribution in John’s memory, the family suggests the American Cancer Society or Blood Cancer United.
